Race for the Cure - April 4, 2009

I realized that most of the people I've given the link to this blog don't have me as a friend on Facebook. That is where most of my stuff gets posted, which means many may have missed the pics we took last Saturday at the Susan G. Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure. It was a very exciting and powerful event to be involved in.

We had a small race team consisting of me, Nic, my mom (Ann), my step-mom (Liz), my ten-year-old half sister (Liesel), my neighbor (Jenny), and my neighbor's sister (Robin). The race was a 5K (but believe me, there was no "racing" involved for us).

When I sent out the info to people to join me in the race or to donate (thanks to all who did!), Liesel called me and said she wanted to be in the race with me. Her aunt (Liz's sister) is currently battling breast cancer and she wanted to walk for her.

A few weeks before the event, Liz and Liesel went for a 1 mile walk to try and build up her stamina, and the next day her foot really hurt. Liz took her to the doctor and found out Liesel has a condition in which the forming growth plates rub on each other and cause pain. Liz decided to go with her and let Liesel take short breaks by riding on the back of Liz's wheelchair every so often. I was very proud that both of them were able to walk with us.

It was amazing to see so many people in one place for this cause. They said that there were over 28,000 people who walked and ran in the event. At one point we were walking down a hill and could see the throngs of people in front of us. It was very powerful! The event raised over $1 million. It was great to be part of such an important cause.
